The Best Fitness I Phone Apps

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Hi All,

As more and more of us move to using smart phones, and especially I Phones. Many of my personal training clients across Manchester have asked, knowing I am a big I Phone fan for my top fitness I Phone apps.

I Map my Run - This is a great little tool to map the runs/jogs that you do.

Sprint GPS - This is a more comprehensive activity log, you can track run/jogs and bike rides. The app allows you to map the route you have taken, it will work out some vital stats such as distance covered, average speed, and calories burnt. One of the best things about this app is that you can control your music from within it.

I Fitness - This app is more of those of you who work out in a gym. This app allows you to deign and track your resistance based workouts. It has a library of exercises that is always being updated, this can really help to keep your workouts fresh.

The above fitness I Phone apps are great tools to help motivate you and make the all important recording keeping easier.

If you have any further suggestions of apps that you think other readers of the blog might fid useful, please do post them as a comment.

The state of our parks!

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Hi All,

A bit of a rant warning!

During my many years working as a personal trainer in Manchester, I have worked out in many of the citys parks and outdoor spaces (also a load in Stockport an Cheshire).

Many of the parks I have conducted personal training sessions in have been at a very high standard, but unfortunately a few have been very poor. Covered with broken glass, litter and dog dirt.  Unfirtunately I have found some siringes and various forms of bio hazard over this period of time too.

I think that we forget how important outdoor space is to the community it is a place to socialise, relax and exercise. As the spaces we live in are getting smaller and more cramped, the impitance of these green spaces will become more and more important to us.  These spaces can offer a range of great benefits not just to persona trining clients but to a wide range of people.  These include relaxation, a place to socialise, to reflect, and to exercise.

As a community I feel it is vital that we take a bit more ownership of these areas and most importantly use them.  If we ensure that these places get great use, we take pride in our space and keep them clean, tidy and great places to be.  I am sure that we will see the overall standads sky rocket.

Please do not get me wrong I have found many parks and open spaces that are great places to be, especially in Manchester, many of the local parks are getting Grren Flags indicating ther quality.  I have decided to publish a top ten list of the very best parks and outdoor spaces to train in across Greater Manchester.  Look out for that comming in the next few weeks.

In terms of improving the communities levels of health and Wellbeing these spaces play a vital role.  I have seen a steady increase in the number of people who are using the parks for health based activities.  They have for a long time been used for football, but we now see grandmothers out walking, mums and dads on a jog, kids playing in play areas, even the odd personal trainer or two!

Sorry if you find this rant a bit off topic but I just feel that we should all look after the open spaces that we have and protect them form misuse!

What is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition?

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Hi All,

As some of you may be aware, especially some of my personal traoning clients, I have become very interetsed in the work of Reed Davies (sparked by Sean, ofcourse).  Reed has developed a system called Functional DIagnostic Nutrition, a course that i am litterally gagging to do!

I thought I would outline some of the key points of how Functional Diagnostic Nutriton works, what it can do for you and the many health benefits it can offer.

FDN does not however deal with, treating illnesses, treating symptoms and diagnosing diseases.

FDN is all about establishing health from the foundation, normalising bodily systems and strengthening the four pillars of health. This is all done by a practitioner who is experianced in looking at the hormonal, immune, digestive and detoxification systems of the body.  The unique factor about the functional diagnostic nutrition approach is that it uses a great deal of detective work to get to the root causes of a condition.  This is done through the taking of an extensive client history and also the use of laboratory testing.  This is a key element to allow the FDN practitioner to find the underlying causes of a variety of diseases.

FDN can help with a number of conditions but some of the key ones are detailsed below:-

  • Weight And Fat Distribution
  • Mucosal Surface Integrity (1st Line Immune Defence)
  • Insulin Levels
  • Thyroid Function
  • Ovarian Hormone Levels
  • Memory and Learning
  • Neuronal Connectivity
  • Quality Of Sleep
  • Mood
  • Muscle Integrity
  • Protein Turnover
  • Bone Turnover
  • Connective Tissue Turnover
  • Cell Energetics
  • Glucose Homeostasis
  • Inflammatory Status
  • Immune Regulation
  • Heavy Metal Endo Chelation
  • Mixed Function Oxidase Modulation

Part of the FDN system is to look at the bodies stress hormones and how the body reponds andreacts to those, these hormones play a crutial role in some of the conditions listed above.  Overuse can also lead to Adrenal Fatigue SYndrome.  Look out for a blog post on this over the comming weeks!

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition is an amazing system and can help a wide variety of people, to find out more have a look at the site or our interview with founder Reed Davies.

Foresight Persona Training Will be offering a range of FDN services across Manchester, Sockport and Cheshire in the next 12 months so if you would like to go on our already established waiting list please fill in the form below.

Run Fat Girl Run

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Hi All,

One of my clients, Kay Bishton has set herself the amazing goal of running the London Marathon in 2011.  She will be part of the breakthrough breast cancer team.

I would just like to say what a great cause we think this is, and if you do too follow the link belwo to Kay’s just giving page.  From all of us here at Foresight Personal Training, we wish you the very best of luck!

In Kay’s own words:-

‘I suppose I should explain what I’m doing and why I need your support!

In July my grandma Betty was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. When I found out I felt useless for not being able to do anything – yet another woman I love has been affected by this evil disease. She has now received treatment and has had successful surgery and is well on the road to recovery. If this had been 20 years ago it would be a different story. This fight against Cancer is getting stronger, research is working and detection is getting picked up sooner because of fundraising but it’s not enough, we need to keep going until we find the cure to beat it!

So, after much consideration (and wine) I decided that I wanted to do something in order to help raise more money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. So what’s on the cards you’re wondering – something drastic, something that I know would be the last thing anyone would expect of a rather curvaceous, unfit, binge drinking 30 year old. I’ve decided to raise money for what I believe is one of the most important charities out there – Yes, I have a place on the Breakthrough Breast Cancer London Marathon 2011 team! Yes, next year’s London Marathon – not a 5k, 10k or a half marathon – no I’ve gone right in for the big one, 26 whole miles through London. (Actually seeing that written down has just made me feel a little bit sick) So my rather ambitious challenge has begun! There’s no turning back – my name is printed on the vest!

In the next 8 months, whilst pounding the streets of Stockport and getting super-duper fit, I’ll be arranging loads of events in order to have a bit of fun and raise much needed funds for this amazing charity. This is where you come in – I need you to pledge your support in any way possible. Attend my events, hold your own or simply dig deep and donate now – a penny or a pound it all adds up! I’ve started a Facebook group “Run Fat Girl Run” so follow the link and join in.

I’ll be doing weekly blogs and uploading rather unflattering Lycra clad photos along the way! I want to do this, I know I can do this – for my brave grandma Betty, her much missed friend Val, for my godmother Joanne, for Shirley and for my friend Cheryl, not forgetting the other women that I know that may face this in the future or who have faced, fought or lost their battle with Cancer.

Kay x’

The North West Chapter of the Western A Price Foundation

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Hi All,

We have an exciting development in the new history of the Western A.Price Foundation – Manchester Chapter, I now have a co-leader!  Shortly after setting up the chapter I was contacted by Elizabeth Wells from Naturally Wells, she was interested in setting up a chapter too.  SO what we have decided is that we will do it together, and as the old sayings go two heads are better than one!

Here is a short bit about Elizabeth:-

Elizabeth (DNN, MFNTP) is a fully-qualified and licensed nutritionist and is a member of the Federation for Nutritional Therapy Practitioners. She has specialist interests in auto-immune illnesses such as ME and Candidiasis, and is actively researching the links between these and more obscure modern conditions such as electrosensitivity and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

‘Much of my research has been informed by a questioning attitude towards conventional wisdom about health, especially the idea that there is a one size fits all ‘healthy’ diet. What we should eat is influenced by multiple factors such as our metabolic type and our ancestry. I tend to look back to what our ancestors ate, to an era before modern industrialised diets laid the foundations for so many of the degenerative diseases we now assume are normal.’

Elizabeth is an experienced writer, and has a PhD in English Literature. She has published articles on health and lifestyle for various publications including Allergy magazine, Your Healthy Living and the NHS.

If you are looking for a good Natural Nutritionist in the Chorlton area do look her up.

On Western A.Price  look our for a new section of the website packed full of Dr Prices teachings, and details of local food resources and chapter information. Or like us on Facebook!

If you would like to know more about the Manchester Chapter of the Western A.Price Foundation please do fill in your details below to join our mailing list.

Fitness Forums

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I have been a user of forums for a number of years, I think they can be great places for the free exchange of ideas between like minded people within the health and fitness community.

jp_logo

JP Fitness Forum – is one of the best all round fitness and related forums I have found on the internet. The forum is used by a lot of people with a very high standard of knowledge in the field of Health, Fitness, and Wellbeing. Well worth a look if you ever have any questions or are looking to increase your personal wellbeing knowledge. The forum covers many areas of strength and conditioning, nutrition and injury management. It is well established so if you want to know the answer to something you can bet it has been discussed at one time or another, and the searchable history makes it easy to find the answer.

fitness+Venues

Fitness Venues – is an off shoot of a UK based Fitness Services Listing and Article based site. The forum has not been going too long but already has a good group of contributors. It covers a very wide range of wellbeing related subjects, including fitness and exercise, diet and weight loss, health and beauty, nutrition and supplements, and leisure jobs. This site has a great deal of potential and will, I am sure come into it’s own over the next year!

MAP

Martial Arts Planet - started off as a Martial Arts based discussion group, but has for the past few years had a thriving fitness section. Again this forum has a great deal of knowledgeable contributors, who have varied backgrounds mainly with a martial arts slant. The sections on this site cover areas such as weight training, body weight training, flexibility, nutrition, injury prevention and management, and CV training. A must for anyone who is into martial arts and fitness.

T MagnumThis is the forum section of the well know Testosterone Nation website. A mainly US based web site covering all aspects of wellbeing generally from a strength and conditioning stand point. The site and forum are well established and have a number of the greats from the world of strength and conditioning as regular contributors.

These are just four forums of the many the net has to offer, they are the ones that I regularly use and can be seen on (screen name Tom@foresight). I do suggest that if you are looking to improve your knowledge on the subject of health and wellbeing have a look at one or two of these sites. They really are fun, no attitude, but knowledgeable places.

Until Next Time,
